What is LSVT BIG?
At Thrive Canberra Home Physio, we deliver the internationally recognised LSVT BIG program in the comfort of your own home. This makes it easier for people with Parkinson’s to access expert care, regardless of their level of mobility or stage of disease progression.
LSVT BIG is a one-on-one physiotherapy program designed to help people move with more confidence, balance, and control. As Parkinson’s progresses, everyday movements can become slower and smaller. Getting out of a chair, walking through the house, or getting dressed can all become more difficult. This program helps retrain the brain and body to use bigger, more purposeful movements, improving function in daily tasks.
The program is tailored to your individual goals and needs. It is suitable for anyone, whether you're newly diagnosed or already experiencing significant mobility challenges. It’s never too early or too late to start.
We make accessing high-quality, expert led care easy. We come to you and provide evidence-based Parkinson’s care in your own home.
FAQs
-
LSVT BIG is an intensive, research-based physiotherapy program designed to help people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions improve their mobility, balance, and everyday movement. It focuses on training the body to move with larger, more purposeful motions, helping clients regain confidence and independence in daily tasks like walking, dressing, and standing up from a chair.
-
No. While LSVT BIG was originally developed for people with Parkinson’s disease, it can also benefit individuals with other neurological conditions that affect movement. These may include atypical parkinsonism, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and brain injuries. At Thrive Canberra Home Physio, we tailor each program to the individual’s diagnosis, movement challenges, and goals.
-
Unlike general physiotherapy, which may focus on specific injuries or gradual rehabilitation, LSVT BIG uses a structured, high-intensity approach designed specifically for neurological movement disorders. It emphasises amplitude training, which means teaching people to move with bigger, more deliberate motions across all aspects of daily life. The program includes daily repetition, functional carryover tasks, and movement calibration, helping clients not only improve strength and coordination, but also relearn how to move more normally in real-world situations. The results often extend beyond strength and flexibility to include improved posture, confidence, and overall participation in daily activities.
-

The standard program includes 17 sessions in total:
1x initial assessment followed by 16 one-hour sessions delivered four times a week for four weeks. The sessions focus on whole-body movement, personalised exercises, and functional tasks, with daily home practice to support long-term results.

That’s absolutely okay. If the standard program feels too intense or doesn’t suit your current health or lifestyle, we can still help.
We will assess your needs and create a personalised physiotherapy plan that works for you. We’re flexible and will always adapt care to support your individual goals and capabilities.
-
